Feathered Mirror - Z Gallerie Inspired Project

So the story behind this project begins when I found online at Lowes a mirror that was on sale for $15 bucks and it ended up being too small for what I initially wanted it for, so it sat in a corner in my dining room for about two weeks.

Week two of the mirror sitting in our dining room LOL

After week two, I came across "Your House Your Home TV's" YouTube video and was immediately inspired to re-purpose the mirror to be something amazing as she was inspired by a similar art piece found at Z Gallerie.  The mirrors at Lowes are sold out, so I found a similar mirror here that would work perfect for this project.

To begin, you will take 3 sets of 10 sheets of copier paper.

On the first set of 10, you will draw large feathers (Full page)
On the second set of 10, you will half (vertical) the pages and draw medium sized feathers
On the third set, you will half (horizontal) the pages and draw small sized feathers

The next part is a tedious, but you will cut the feathers out, using the first page as a template and cutting them all together. I cut mine while watching my favorite movie, Bad Boys.

Paper Feathers  - you can make extra notches on the side to make them look more realistic

In Your House Your Home's project, she used metallic spray paint, which yielded a more glamorous chic result, I wanted to make mine a little more rustic and traditional for the spot it was going to be in. I used Rust-Oleum Chalked Spray Pain - Gray to give my feathers a old weathered look. Any color you are inspired to do, I say go for it. The key to spray painting the feathers, you will need to weigh them down with something so that they do not fly away when you start spraying. Let your feathers dry overnight.

For the next step, I used a hot glue gun and clear E-600 glue to layer the feathers on the mirror.

The order of feathers are large- medium - small and you continue to layer until you come to a center.

Start with large- medium- small into a circular pattern to come to center

I used the E-600 glue to first glue down the large feathers to ensure they stick because they are going to be on the mirror. Once I finished the large feathers, I then started with the medium and used a hot glue gun to layer those, then moved to the smaller ones and layered those to come into a circle. You will have to cute some feathers as you layer into a circle.

Finished Product!

I was so excited in how this turned out and have gotten so many compliments.

Share your projects and let me know what colors you chose for your feathers or another technique you used! Feel free to send me any questions you may have, I was too excited when I started and missed taking a lot a of process pictures with this project, so I hope I was able to explain the steps clearly. Happy Crafting!

Be Great,
   Stephanie
